Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are a common treatment option for many forms of neck, arm, lower back and leg pain. Specifically, they are designed to help treat sciatica, spinal stenosis, disc herniation and degenerative disc disease.
This outpatient procedure is performed under fluoroscopy to confirm that the medication is placed in the appropriate area. The physician will inject a local anesthetic and a steroid medication directly into the epidural space that surrounds the spinal cord and nerve roots.
The goals of an epidural steroid injection are to control pain by reducing inflammation in and around the nerve roots. This should result in reduced pain and improved mobility and function. Epidural steroid injections can also be utilized to aid in a patient’s ability to make progress with physical therapy or a rehabilitation program.
